Fast Forward one Year…
I arrived in Kentucky to intern with ER. Just as I was searching for internships, and just as ER was looking to expand their ministry to China, God brought us together. During my internship, I became well acquainted with members of a local Chinese Christian Church, where I taught English classes and joined Bible studies; I traveled to an annual Chinese Christian conference to share with and learn from believers in other regional churches; and I caught onto ER’s vision for reaching China.
Now, this raises the question: how do we reach China? How do we, an organization in the U.S., reach a country where government officials strive to shroud the truth behind a curtain of anti-religiosity and persecute anyone who dares to reveal it? Add to that a mix of tightening borders, frighteningly advanced surveillance technology, and political turmoil, and the odds of the American church impacting China for the Kingdom seem pretty small.
Despite all that, in 2018 the Council on Foreign Relations reported China could have the world's largest population of Christians by 2030. And a writer for China Source estimates there could already be as many as 116 million Protestant Christians in China. The Chinese church is growing, and it's clear that God is reaching China with His gospel. So, the more relevant question is this: how can we participate in the work God is already doing?
